Douglas CurranTHE ELEPHANT HAS FOUR HEARTS: NYAU MASKS AND RITUALS by Douglas Curran. Vancouver photographer Douglas Curran first met the Chewa people of Zimbabwe, Africa in 1992. Over the ensuing years, he gained sufficient trust and respect to document the secret rituals of the Nyau, their secret society of spirit dancers. The ensuing photographs, currently on exhibit at the Presentation House Gallery, are captured in startling colour in this catalogue. A fascinating article by Curran accompanies the images.

48 pp. (22 colour and 6 b&w) softcover $20 CDN. Available from the Presentation House Gallery (604) 986-1351 or online at www.presentationhousegall.com

Amelia Alcock-WhiteOPENER: The Paintings of Amelia Alcock-White, 2003-2004. A large and lavish colour catalogue showcasing paintings by a new and very talented Vancouver artist at the Simon Patrich Gallery. The large-scale reproductions convey the fantasy life of Amelia Alcock-White and her husband, musician Tom Lavin by depicting the couple in colourful surrealist scenes. Each image is accompanied by short poems and prose by the artist.

54 pp. softcover $30 CDN. Available from the Simon Patrich Gallery (604) 733-2662 or by email to marianne@simonpatrich.com

SphereSPHERE, a catalogue of discerning essays and photographs of pieces in the exhibit of the same name at the Presentation House Gallery, fall 2003. The exhibition featured contemporary artwork using images of spheres and spheroids that ranged from photographs, drawings and paintings to sculpturesand performance art. The subject matter was as disparate as peepholes in hoardings, computer-generated modelling, mutant heads, bottle caps, apples and viruses.

80 pp. $20 CDN. Available from the Presentation House Gallery (604) 986-1351 or online at www.presentationhousegall.com

Douglas CurranBEAUTY QUEENS, a small catalogue published to accompany the traveling exhibit at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. The book provides imagery of islands depicted in the show as well as insightful writing by curators Lisa Baldissera and Shauna McCabe and Canadian authors Audrey Thomas, Michael Crummey, Alistair MacLeod and Bruce Johnson.

112 pp. softcover $15.95 CDN. Available on the West Coast from The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (250) 384-4101 or by email to aholierhoek@aggv.bc.ca

CoincidentCOINCIDENT, a set of postcards and a 15-page essay by Don Gill for photographer Margaret Lawther's June, 2003 exhibit at Artspeak, an artist-run centre in Vancouver. The postcards are taken from Lawther's travel shots of the Trans-Canada highway, the world's longest national highway. The images of endless barren fields alongside the endless highway, coupled with skid marks, gravel shoulders and junked cars are, realistically, more acerbic than romantic.

$15 CDN. Available from Artspeak (604) 688-0051 or online at www.artspeak.bc.ca

Please note: Prices may be subject to additional charges for postage, handling and taxes.

We encourage galleries and museums to submit catalogues of recent exhibitions for review consideration to Preview, PO Box 549, Station ‘A’, Vancouver, BC, Canada.
