BurgersBOBBIE BURGERS: This luscious 90-page hardcover catalogue of Bobbie Burgers’ impressionist paintings for her March exhibition showcases her flower and garden paintings, plus 11 landscapes painted in Provence. The West Vancouver artist is rising rapidly to international renown with 23 solo and group exhibits in the past five years, and upcoming shows in Seattle, Toronto, Montreal and New York. The photographs taken by Vancouver’s Ted Clarke reveal every brushstroke and pencil mark in the large colour reproductions.

90 pages, hardcover, $40 CDN/USD. Available from the Bau-Xi Gallery, Vancouver BC, 604-731-7011 and Foster White Gallery, Seattle WA, 206-622-2833.

Enn ErisaluREAD: Enn Erisalu is a catalogue for In Memorium, an exhibit of text-based works created by Vancouver artist Enn Erisalau between 1989-2003. It includes essays by Robin Laurence and Christopher Brayshaw. Erisalu, known for his elegant studies of cubes, cones and rectangles, more recently worked with numbers, symbols, and words – many taken from art vocabulary – on painted surfaces. Thirty-five colour images and dozens of notebook sketches explore his investigation of painting’s relationship to language, and show the depth of his intellect and working processes.

64 pages, hardcover, $20 CDN. Available from Atelier Gallery, Vancouver BC, 604-731-3021.

Evan LeeEVAN LEE: Captures, Selected Works 1998-2006, with texts by Christopher Brayshaw, Peter Culley, William Wood and a foreword by Jeff Wall. Vancouver artist Evan Lee uses the clarity and photographic language unique to flatbed scanners – odd prisms, light beams and random digital glitches – to produce images of ginseng roots, drafting curves and camera parts. The catalogue was produced for the Presentation House exhibition curated by Bill Jeffries, Jan 21-Mar 5, 2006.

68 pages, softcover, $20 CDN. Available from Presentation House Gallery, North Vancouver BC, 604-986-1351 or email: presentationhousegall@telus.net.

Rozome MastersROZOME MASTERS OF JAPAN accompanies the Bellevue Arts Museum Bellevue, Washington exhibit (through June 18) of work by 15 contemporary Japanese artists working in rozome or batik. The beautiful images, created with rice paste lines to delineate shapes and patterns, are frequently surprising for the degree of realism and fine detail that can be achieved with this medium. The catalogue features both abstract and stylized images of traditional and contemporary designs.

78 pages, softcover. $20 USD. Available from the Bellevue Arts Museum store, Bellevue WA, 425-519-0770.

Brian JungenBRIAN JUNGEN is a substantial catalogue published in conjunction with Brian Jungen’s retrospective exhibit at the Vancouver Art Gallery, through Apr 30. The Vancouver-based artist fashions consumer goods like plastic cafeteria trays, lawn chairs, Nike Air Jordans, soccer balls, shoelaces and cardboard boxes into sculptures and installations that have garnered global appeal and critical interest. The large-scale publication, contains critical essays by curator Daina Augaitis among others, and has extensive photographs of individual artworks, gallery installations and video clips.

162 pages, hardcover. $65 CDN, $50 USD. Available from the Vancouver Art Gallery shop, Vancouver BC, 604-662-4719.

Fragrance of the PastFRAGRANCE OF THE PAST: Chinese Calligraphy and Painting by Ch'ung-Ho Chang Frankel and Friends, was published for the exhibit at the Seattle Asian Art Museum through Apr 2. Ch’ung-Ho Chang Frankel was born in Shanghai, China in 1914 and moved with her husband to the United States in 1949. She is considered a master of Chinese literati art. The slim volume contains numerous images, anecdotal and scholarly articles, and an interview with the artist.

40 pages, Softcover. $11.95 USD. Available from the Seattle Asian Art Museum store, Seattle WA, 206-654-3120 or email: store@seattleartmuseum.org.

Please note: Prices may be subject to additional charges for postage, handling and taxes.

We encourage galleries and museums to submit catalogues of recent exhibitions for review consideration to Preview, PO Box 549, Station ‘A’, Vancouver, BC, Canada.
