Drawn primarily from the collections of the Vancouver Art Gallery, the artworks include representational, abstract, conceptual, sculptural and photographic pieces, with a fair bit of Emily Carr and First Nations content.

China Design NowTHE SHORES WE CALL HOME: THE ART OF CAROL EVANS, showcases more than 80 watercolour paintings by Salt Spring Island artist Carol Evans. Applying a magic realist style and emphasizing the play of light on water, Evans has captured vistas of BC coastal nature for 30 years. Many of the images of scenes from the Georgia Strait to Haida Gwaii are reproduced full-page. An introductory essay by Evans describes her idyllic island life and sailing trips with her husband.

Softcover, 96 pages, $18.95 CAD. Available from Harbour Publishing, 1-800-667-2988 www.harbourpublishing.com/book.php?id=762

China Design NowCRITICAL MESSAGES: CONTEMPORARY NORTHWEST ARTISTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT was published for a regionally travelling exhibition that explores how artists are responding to the natural, diverse Pacific Northwest in the context of a rapidly changing environment and a gathering crisis of degradation. The catalogue includes artist statements by the 26 featured artists alongside full-colour images. Essays by curator Sarah Clark-Langager and award-winning environmental journalist, William Dietrich, provide further context for the specific art works. The exhibition travels to Salem, OR and Boise, ID after it closes at the Western Gallery in Bellingham, WA on May 29.

Softcover, 80 pages, $24.95 USD, Available at Western Gallery, Bellingham, WA
