The strange fantasies of former-USSR artist Vitaly Medvedovsky merge reality with history, fairy tales and Eastern European mythology. His “pseudo-historical, completely imagined world” has included city scenes, forests populated with totemic creatures, and mountainous landscapes with curious machinery, futuristic buildings and cars. The ambiguous narratives frequently include passive observers or witnesses modelled on himself and his friends.

In the latest series, Medvedovsky worked from photos he shot on the streets of Berlin to create dark images of war and labour in a Social Realist style. They feature eclectic architecture with ancient palaces, new skyscrapers and old Soviet-style apartment blocks, and are peopled with warriors, tradesmen and casual observers all based on his cast of actors. The composited paintings, which he describes as “increasingly cryptic, anachronistic environments,” have a gloomy, post-apocalyptic feeling.

Vitaly Medvedovsky was born in Kharkov, Ukraine and immigrated to Canada in 1998. He earned his BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design and an MFA from Concordia University, Montreal. In 2009, a landmark year for the artist, he was the recipient of the Joseph Plaskett Award, the inaugural recipient of the Winsor Gallery Award at Concordia University, and was granted an Ontario Arts Council emerging artist grant. He exhibits his unusual work in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.
