During the month of February (February 1-28, 2011), the Exposure 2011: Calgary Banff Canmore Photography Festival is showcasing the photographic arts in Alberta with more than 30 exhibitions in Calgary, Banff and Canmore. In conjunction with the festival, Weiss Gallery presents recent work by Colin Smith and Michael Levin.

The main exhibit features the brilliant work of emerging Calgary photographer Colin Smith. Smith builds homemade camera obscura optical devices on location then photographs the resulting projections. Smith manipulates the light of the obscura projections as well as natural light to produce the highly saturated, breathtaking imagery. The 4 x 5 film transparencies are reproduced as limited series lightjet archival metallic prints. The most successful and memorable pictures may be the Abandoned Landscapes with their exterior views of the countryside superimposed on the walls and floors of dilapidated and peeling wood interiors.

Michael Levin's work is the antithesis of Smith's exuberant, fascinating panoramas. In his trademark quiet style, the Vancouver photographer presents black and white images of still, almost soundless landscapes. Many of the pictures are so spare and minimal it is difficult at first glance to imagine the origins. Levin travels extensively and has won numerous awards for his elegant, pristine work.
