Glenn Lewis is among a legion of artists to have emerged from the Vancouver art scene in the 1960s. However, while that previous generation distinguished itself largely through abstracted landscape painting, Lewis chose ceramics. Later, though that remained his primary medium, he became a devout interdisciplinarian, developing a practice that included photography, performance and curation.

With a long and storied career that shows no signs of abating, Lewis, now 78, has returned to ceramics. In 2013, he went back to St. Ives, Cornwall, where he had studied at the Leach Pottery in 1964. There he made pots, performances and pictures, some of which are now on display at a gallery committed to artists who were active when Lewis was a pup.

For his second Trench exhibition, Lewis approaches the gallery space as a total installation, where pots made with a variety of treatments are displayed below similarly scaled photographic pictures of the towns in which they were made. In an accompanying essay, the artist notes how our homes are filled with just such pairings, though in this case he has set out to “investigate connections (obvious and hidden) and the tensions between them.”
