Cindy Sherman is a real American artist. Dzunuk'wa is a Northwest Coast Kwakwaka'wakw mythic figure. Both, however, share a common nature in being transformational: Sherman as an actor in her Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980) and Dzunuk'wa (often presented through the masks of Kwakwaka'wakw carver Beau Dick) as a being known for her ability to return from the dead.

So, one might ask, what would come of a meeting between the two? The answer to this question, it turns out, is an impressive and wide-ranging exhibition assembled entirely with pieces from one of Vancouver’s leading private collections. Focusing on both contemporary First Nations and modern art, the Michael and Inna O’Brian collection reflects just what legendary curator Doris Shadbolt insisted: that art made by First Nations artists in our time be considered contemporary art.

That point is well made in this exhibit – put together by curators Karen Duffek (Museum of Anthropology), Helga Pakasaar (Presentation House Gallery), Cate Rimmer (Charles H. Scott Gallery) and Keith Wallace (Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery) – where there’s clearly chemistry when Sherman meets Dzunuk'wa.
