Althea Thauberger: Marat Sade Bohnice

Audain Gallery, SFU Woodward’s
Vancouver BC – Jan 16-Mar 8, 2014

Since the debut of Songstress (2001) at Vancouver’s Artspeak Gallery, Althea Thauberger has made a number of works that enlist existing communities as collaborators in her films, videos, pictures and performances. Some of these communities include tree planters in a northern B.C. camp, spouses of deployed U.S. soldiers, and residents and cultural workers in Vancouver's downtown eastside – literally, just outside the gallery from where the artist had her start.

Most recently, it was at Prague’s Bohnice psychiatric clinic that Thauberger teamed up with the clinic’s in-house gallery and the Theater Akanda company to film the latter’s 2012 staging of Peter Weiss's 1963 play Marat/Sade. In the Akanda work, actors play the part of hospital patients in post-revolutionary France, before an audience made up of the clinic’s patients and staff, many of whom Thauberger interviews as part of her production.

Though the result here is a looser, meta-version of Weiss’s “play within a play,” the avant-garde dramatist might well have approved of this staging.

Thauberger’s film is to receive its Vancouver debut in a neighbourhood where mental health is a part of the cultural ecology. This will add a further layer to the already many-layered work Weiss gave us in his story of journalist Jean-Paul Marat’s assassination, as imagined by the Marquis de Sade.
