Ley Fuga: Edgardo Aragón

Deluge Contemporary Art
Victoria BC – Mar 28-May 24, 2014

Edgardo Aragón, who studied for his BA in Fine Arts at the ENPEG la Esmeralda in Mexico City, is a 28-year-old Oaxacan filmmaker who is receiving considerable acclaim for his restrained but terrifying narratives that explore the existence of violence in families, in society and as it is used both politically and economically – particularly by those engaged in the brutal narcopolitics of Mexico.

Deborah de Boer, director and curator of Deluge Gallery, writes: “Ley Fuga (‘the law of flight’ or simply ‘vanishing act’) is an archaic term for a type of extrajudicial execution commonly used during the Mexican Revolution, wherein a prisoner is shot in the back while his captors simulate his ‘escape.’ In this eponymous work, Aragón constructs a symbolic suicide as a man removes his shirt, drapes it on the mast of a small raft in a stream and, as it begins to drift out beyond his reach, fires on it.”

Also of importance to Aragón is the presence of the landscape, as an ode both to art history and to the mute beauty of his homeland. Action is filmed in the quiet, empty fields and the dusty dirt roads of rural Oaxaca. Described repeatedly as poetic, Aragón’s work has been shown in solo exhibitions in Mexico City, New York and Los Angeles. This is his first exhibition in Canada.
