These two exhibitions offer an in-depth view into the artistic legacy of Washington painter John Cole (1936-2007). The British-born artist painted in the region for nearly 40 years, his favourite subjects being Northwest landscapes which now define his most well-known artworks. The large retrospective at MoNA offers both quintessential examples of his modernist landscapes as well as lesser-known figurative and still pieces that trace major influences on Cole’s style. The development of his unique vision blends an impeccable sense of colour with both Cubist and Fauvist attributes, resulting in semi-abstract, expressive compositions that are rooted in a sublime representation of nature.

The Lisa Harris Gallery exhibition also offers strong insight into the breadth of Cole’s artistic production, with many never-before-seen canvasses and works on paper that span a 35-year period. Interpretations of places such as Depoe Bay, Oregon, and mountain and river scenes rendered with vivid, confident brushstrokes and simplified forms show that Cole was a true colourist who was able to distill the most essential landscape elements into uniquely spirited compositions. Some of Cole’s still life and interior depictions are also included, along with plein-air works, intimate renditions of the human figure and larger studio pieces that are most indicative of his style.

May 10, 2pm – Panel discussion with artists who knew Cole during his lifetime will take place at MoNA in La Conner. The event will be facilitated by exhibit curators Lisa Harris and Sarah Harvey.
