It is sometimes said that contemporary art lacks humour. One can understand why. A common dismissal of an artwork is to refer to it as a “one-liner.”

Vancouver has a number of artists who use humour less as a premise than as a punchline. If Rodney Graham is the city’s Walter Mitty, and Ken Lum its expert in eliciting the nervous laugh, then Myfanwy MacLeod is its resident cut-up – in more ways than one.

For the past few years, MacLeod has made a number of works that involve folding over publicity posters and, in most cases, cutting sections from them as a child would to make a paper snowflake. As simple as that sounds, the results can be jarring. Part of this has to do with the content, which ranges from posters for films like The Exorcist (1973) to images of deceased celebrities like Vancouver’s Dorothy Stratten.

In addition to MacLeod’s more recent works, this survey exhibition includes some of her large-scale inflatable and fibreglass sculptures from the 1990s (MacLeod created the outsized sparrows at Vancouver’s Olympic Village Plaza). And because she has distinguished herself as curator of late, MacLeod will provide an “artist’s choice” component, entitled Cock and Bull, drawn from the VAG’s now overflowing collection.
