Mark Neufeld - Fuschia Slag

Victoria artist Mark Neufeld is a recent MFA graduate and the first recipient of the Joseph Plaskett Foundation Award in 2004. Neufeld was chosen for the $25,000 inaugural award for his mastery of painting and plans to spend the next year in Berlin, studying alongside a new generation of German artists that includes Thomas Scheibitz and Franz Ackerman. Lumph is a survey of paintings from his graduate show at the University of Victoria.

Neufeld’s large-scale paintings are animated with bright colours and dynamic shapes. They depict the semblance of rooms from film décor and interior design magazines. Images painted with acrylic on canvas combine a multiplicity of spheres, cubes and angled planes that he contrasts with soft billowing forms. They are like an inside view of Etienne Zack’s exterior locations that are littered with packaging forms, building materials and other rubble. The mixed viewpoints and sheared perspectives give the viewer a sense of dislocation and vertigo.

Neufeld’s resumé includes a number of galleries known for promoting new artists: the Tracey Lawrence Gallery, Havana Gallery and Xeno Gallery in Vancouver; Rogue Art in Victoria; Seattle’s Soil Art Gallery and the Samplesize online gallery. Prior to his MFA work at the University of Victoria, Neufeld graduated with honours from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design's studio programme in 1994.
