Horia Boboia: Spring Collection

Chambers
Portland OR thru Jun 30, 2006

Horia Boboia presents an intimate collection of costumed figures in paintings that underscore human fears, idiosyncrasies and archetypes. The figures are defined by moody postures and ethereal settings symbolic of emotions.

The imagery, derived from the collective experience, is told through personages like Dracula, The Fool and Terrorist. Some pieces have a dark, medieval quality while others, like Box, evoke naivety of someone who is without self-consciousness. Suspended between fact and fiction, tragedy and comedy, the rational and the absurd, the faded stereotypes remind us of our mortality. The archaic beings are like spirits of the past. Boboia’s underpainting allows his characters to emerge from their foggy backgrounds, where they seem to point to the temporality of existence. Although, as vignettes these small paintings leave room for individual interpretations.
