Divining Natures is a group show of work by three mid-career artists from the Surrey area. As a whole, the artwork in the exhibit has an Aboriginal sensibility in terms of motifs, colouration and structure. Described as rich in symbolism of the natural world, the paintings and mixed-media works include references to lizards, eagles, caribou, salmon, bears, frogs and the bighorn sheep of Canada’s north.

White Rock painter Mary Frances Batut has been exhibiting since 1991. Her recent designs of simple shapes, like a long-tailed lizard, have finely detailed, jewel-like patterns. The stylized and elegant work has been described as bold, colourful, graphic, symbolic, often humorous and deceptively simple in execution.

Deborah Putman, a graduate of Montreal’s Concordia University, studied at the Atlin Art Centre in 2005. Based on her working photos, her paintings – reminiscent of those by Canadian artist Judith Currelly – feature totem-like compositions of animals from the Boreal Shield.

Like a magpie, South Surrey fibre artist Elizabeth Carefoot scavenges and collects scraps of fabric, buttons, fragments of bone, feathers, shells, pebbles, candy wrappers and bits of metal, from which she fashions colourful shamanistic robes, altars, dolls, elaborate wall hangings and collages.
