Esra Ersen: Landed

Richmond Art Gallery
Richmond BC – Jun 28-Aug 18, 2013

Organized by Richmond Art Gallery curator Nan Capogna, Landed features two video-based installations by Turkish artist Esra Ersen. As in many public gallery shows today, themes of identity, language, stereotype and migration are central with the artwork generated through public collaboration.

Ersen developed I am Turkish, I am Honest, I am Diligent… in three versions. The title is taken from a Turkish patriotic oath and the work explores concepts of culture, education and ethnicity among school children in Germany (1998), Korea (2004) and Austria (2005).

Artist Talk with Esra Ersen, Thursday, June 27, at 8pm

Passengers (2009) is a two-channel video that follows the journey of a group of women, their children and some male relatives on a bus ride to the Bosphorus Sea during a pre-election period in Istanbul. Like the first installation, Passengers takes a metaphoric look at relationships between individuals and their society, with an emphasis on how identities are shaped and transformed across national, cultural and linguistic boundaries.

Ersen was born and educated in Turkey and France. For the past 15 years she has participated in numerous art programs around the world. Her work has been included in several Biennials – the 27th São Paulo, the 4th and 8th Istanbul, the 4th Gwangu, Liverpool and Manifesta 4 Europe – in addition to many solo and group exhibitions. Landed is Ersen’s first Canadian exhibition.
