Nationally recognized Portland photographer Holly Andres is known for her saturated colour images that often depict youthful characters in curious settings. This major exhibit includes over 40 evocative pieces in her signature style of fictitious scenes that point to larger narratives.

Acting as both a photographer and director, Andres meticulously creates her imagery to reflect a stylized 1970s look, crafting each tableau with era-appropriate props and clothing that give her theatrical pieces a certain authenticity. The attractive large-scale images reflect Andres’ personal coming-of-age histories.

Psychological portraits drawn from her own upbringing tell tales of inquisitive adolescent girls losing their innocent perspective, of the complexities of childhood and memory, and of heroic mothers protecting their children. These themes are acted out through a cast of characters caught in snapshot moments where the tension carried from one image to the next informs the conceptual whole. Andres’ staged melodramas pay a great deal of attention to arrangements of colour within composition. This cinematic sense of heightened reality set against a nostalgic backdrop makes these pieces feel like a modern fable about to reveal an important lesson.

The exhibit features work from several different series that Andres has produced over the last eight years. These include her newest one, Backseat Vanitas, still lifes of the backseats of cars and a large photo-installation; and The Trail of Sparrow Lane, which depicts the psychological trail of an adolescent character.
