The past few years have seen an increase in exhibitions by artists of Aboriginal descent. There are two main reasons for this. First, the voices, marks and gestures of these artists have for too long been under-represented at our public art galleries. Second, these exhibitions are popular amongst those who do not normally visit galleries.

Although not an art gallery per se, the Museum of Anthropology has, by virtue of anthropology’s commitment to the holistic study of man, worked to help expand the parameters of the artistic gesture in our social media moment. Thus, it should come as no surprise that house curator Pam Brown, along with curatorial assistant Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, has mounted an exhibition of “contemporary, conceptual and Native art” that features 25 young artists from across Canada, the U.S., Norway and New Zealand, “to define what it really means to be an urban Aboriginal artist today.”

Here, “film, fashion, photography, painting, performance, creative writing, new media, and more” expand the parameters of the notion of artistic practice. Works with the potential to attract close readings can be found in the fur hoodie shawl of Jeneen Frei Njootli and in the warm, painterly surrealism of Cody Lecoy’s Lion’s Gate Bridge (2013).
