Io Palmer: Access/Excess

Deluge Gallery
Victoria BC – Jun 21-Jul 17, 2014

Io Palmer is from the Greek island of Hydra, where motorized vehicles are forbidden and citizens travel by foot, bicycle or donkey. She currently works as an associate professor at Washington State University.

Schooled first in painting and then ceramics, Palmer brings her unique perspective to bear on her contemporary mix of sculpture, installation, drawing and performance. She is of the school that both incorporates and illuminates a kind of repetitive labour, but with radically potent results. This is most obvious in her watercolour drawing series of hirsute images built up through hundreds of marks of clear, translucent colour. These drawings are excessive and beautiful, but also creepily horrific. One doesn’t know whether to swoon or itch.

Labour and materials are the focus of this current exhibition as well, with a special eye on the prevailing trends of our times, particularly the glittering problems that accompany both elitist wealth and broad-based oil dependence. Palmer writes, “Labor is the force that cleans up large spills to give order to the unmanageable. And labor is what drives and forms high-end couture garments only accessible to very few…. This work borrows from these moments when society shows its fullness – its unbridled opulence and its exaggerated overabundance, then refashions these developments into…forms that morph between cultured sophistication, industrial work and gaudily dressed-up camp.
