Margaret Peterson (1903–1997), a native of Seattle, Washington, earned a master’s degree at the University of California, Berkeley, where she later spent 22 years on faculty in the art department. She eventually chose to leave her position and her country during the McCarthy era rather than sign the so-called loyalty oath.

Considered one of the Berkeley Modernists of the 1940s, Peterson created primarily large-scale abstract works using egg tempera on plywood. In the mid 1960s and ’70s, she was commissioned to develop glass and ceramic mosaics for the University of Victoria and the BC Hydro building in Victoria.

Peterson was deeply interested in spirituality and spent much of her life travelling the world, researching the continuum of human spiritual belief and practice. She used this experience as the basis of her work. She was particularly interested in the art and spiritual iconography of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest and of Central and South America.

This exhibit, curated by Justine Auben Drummond, accesses the resources of the University of Victoria’s Artist Archives and Legacy Art Galleries. It includes many of Peterson’s paintings and drawings, as well as her personal papers, photographs, press clippings and artifacts collected over her lifetime..
