Susan Point, The River – Rewoven by Time (2003), serigraph [Spirit Wrestler Gallery, Vancouver BC, Jun 28-Jul 19]

Musqueam artist Susan Point is proficient in a variety of printmaking techniques. She pulled her first serigraphs at home on her kitchen table while employed as a legal secretary. Over the years, she has added carving and casting to her skill set. Like Kwakwaka’wakw artist Ellen Neel, who was the first woman to carve poles, Point was the first woman to work in glass, a medium taken up most notably by another Kwakwaka’wakw artist, Marianne Nicolson.

Though serigraph printmaking remains central to her practice, Point has focused her attention of late on commissioned sculpture. Still, she continues to mark each year with the release of a new set of prints. This year, however, Spirit Wrestler Gallery is making almost every limited edition print produced by Point since 1981 available for exhibit and sale. Also planned is the launch of a handsome cloth-bound book that documents 169 of the more than 300 prints Point has pulled since those early days in her kitchen.

Notable works on display include Salish Path (2010), a variant of the granite mosaic Point placed at the entrance of the Museum of Anthropology, and The River – Rewoven by Time (2003), for those who appreciate the artist’s careful use of intermediate colour and braided motifs.
