For his second solo show at Woodside/Braseth Gallery, former Pollock-Krasner Foundation fellow Nathan DiPietro is displaying a dozen more of his realistic tempera-on-panel paintings of nature gone awry thanks to reckless human overdevelopment.

DiPietro, whose work was included in the 2010 Evergreen State College Gallery exhibition Country Cousins: An Exploration of the Contemporary Frontier Myth, builds on the American regionalist tradition of Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton, turning their bland celebrations of Midwest mundanity into ominous eco-warnings of controlled natural environments such as those found in commercial spas, wilderness resorts and suburban tract housing developments.

Alternately witty and horrifying, DiPietro’s new work continues building the artist’s following among savvy novelists, writers and rock musicians. Like scenes from Planet of the Apes and other 1970s eco-thrillers (see Soylent Green), DiPietro’s art is instantly accessible but has a slow-burning fuse before its quiet explosion into images and predictions of devastation, ruined forests and vanishing settlements, all the result of misguided, short-sighted political decisions. Freeways, neighbourhood and downtown areas are fringed by shrinking old-growth timber and tightly manicured set-asides where populations of the future may “experience” nature.
