Rick Rivet: Paintings 2000-2005 is a visually rich exhibition organized and circulated by the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon. Rick Rivet was born and raised in Aklavik, Northwest Territories. He spent his formative years on the Mackenzie River Delta in a community that included Inuit, Indians, Métis and various peoples of European descent. In his paintings, he draws from his experiences of the diversity of Inuit, Indian, and Métis cultures.
Rivet’s work is influenced by other ancient shamanistic societies throughout the world, philosophical thoughts centred on ideas of the universal unconscious, and his interest in the art movements of Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. For Rivet, art is a meditative process, one that mirrors the shaman’s function as mediator between the spirit world and the world of the human. Recurring themes in his paintings include journeys through life, dreams, mapping, and transformation.

Rivet has had extensive formal education with a BA from the University of Alberta (1969-72); BFA (Painting) from the University of Victoria (1976-80); MFA (Painting) from the University of Saskatchewan (1983-85); and BEd from the University of Saskatchewan (1985-86). He currently lives and works in Terrace, British Columbia.
