Travelers: Objects of Dream and Revelation

Bellevue Arts Museum
Bellevue WA – Aug 26-Dec 31, 2011

Travelers: Objects of Dream and Revelation brings together the work of nine contemporary artists who loosely explore the theme of travel. Sculptural objects and installations provoke fantasies and dream-oriented ideas about the anticipation of travel and what can be experienced and what actually happens during travel.

The artists – Janice Arnold, Margarita Cabrera, Marc Dombrosky, Erika Harrsch, Timothy Horn, Cal Lane, Walter Martin & Paloma Muñoz, and Robb Putnam – investigate the alluring notion of escape from routine in lyrical works with imaginary narratives. Their pieces are unified by an emphasis on surrealist qualities that sometimes parallel the actual experience of travel in our culture.

In particular, snow globe sculptures by Walter Martin & Paloma Muñoz conjure memories from childhood excursions, while Margarita Cabrera’s deflated-looking bicycle made from vinyl, thread, wire and foam feels like something from an escapist dream that went awry. Janice Arnold and Timothy Horn both present ambitious life-size works. Arnold’s tent-like installation fashioned from elegant and luxurious fabrics evokes images of exotic lands, while Horn’s fantastical carriage made of crystallized rock sugar seems like it came from an extravagant tale in a world where baroque sensibilities collide with Willy Wonka-like playfulness.
