Launched in 2001, the Canadian Forces Artists Project (CFAP) invites practitioners to work alongside military personnel in conflict zones. Unlike earlier war artist programs that commissioned paintings by soldier-artists – such as A.Y. Jackson (WWI) and Alex Colville (WWII) – the CFAP does not collect or exhibit the work of those who, in the words of exhibition curator Christine Conley, “volunteer for the privileged access it offers.”

With that in mind, Conley selected work from three recent alumni for a national tour that concludes at the Esker. Whereas Jackson and Colville painted conflict in more recognizable terms, the artists in this exhibition, like the soldiers with whom they were embedded, employ more sophisticated technologies to give us work in a range of media, many of which depict not the literal conflict but its abstracted consequences.

In Dick Averns’s digital print Retired Observation Posts (MFO Camp Sinai) (2009), a structure is less a shelter than a support for its rooftop cameras. In Adrian Stimson’s print Ma’sum Ghar Fortification (2010), the remaining concrete wall evokes the gridded wall of deceased Aboriginal soldiers in his later print Memory (2011). In nichola feldman-kiss’s “video triptych,” an East African school girl performs war-themed show tunes in a field in rural Quebec.
