Papetti – Madrid

Alessandro Papetti, Madrid (2006), oil on linen [Buschlen Mowatt Gallery, Vancouver BC, Nov 1-30]

A new series by Italian expressionist painter Alessandro Papetti continues his exploration of movement and light. Papetti attempts to “capture” a moment on canvas in the same way that a camera does, in a fraction of a second.

Papetti himself has described his artistic production as a record of what happens in the time and space between two different events – whether a change in point of view, a change caused by the passing of time, or a re-positioning of a subject. His masterful brushwork seeks elusive glimpses of city streets and bridges, the pose of a model, the energy of shipping yards, and the expansive volume of cargo ships. The works reveal an intimate, shifting balance between chaos and calm.

Papetti - Bather

Papetti lives and works in his birth city, Milan. He first exhibited in Milan in 1987 and since 1995, has divided his time between Milan and Paris. Largely self-taught, he has relied upon his own curiosity, observation and research to develop his passion. He has now painted for 21 years and has had dozens of international exhibits.

Papetti’s mesmerizing work has been described as demonstrating “intuitive self-possession’, “dazzling bravura” and “a palpable, vivid sense of the brilliant presence of a whirlpool of energy that illuminates things”. His paintings are found in private and museum collections around the world.
