Marjetica Potrc: The Making of New Territories and Communities

Audain Gallery, SFU Woodward’s
Vancouver BC – Oct 7-Dec 18, 2010

The work of Slovenia- born artist Marjetica Potrc is centred on new forms of social practices within urban settings and community-based environmental projects. She is known for her use of alternative, environmentally sustainable construction materials combined with little money and a great deal of creativity. At the heart of much of her architecture/artwork is an examination of the territorial imperatives of water – how future cities and states will form themselves around the remaining natural resources.

Her projects are set in both rural and urban locations and continuously explore the fundamental human needs for community, safety, and shelter. They have included prototypes for converting saline water, building dry toilets, new forms of housing, rain-harvesting, fuel cells and solar energy. The current exhibition, which emphasizes the global phenomena of urbanization, features work done in the Amazon region of Brazil; in Tirana, Albania; Prishtina, Republic of Kosovo; Essen, Germany; Venice, Italy; and in Detroit and Amsterdam.

Potrc's work has been featured in exhibitions throughout Europe and North and South America, including the São Paulo Biennial in Brazil (1996, 2006), the Venice Biennale (1993, 2003, 2009); and a solo show at the Guggenheim, New York (2001). As of October 2010, Potrc is the inaugural artist of the Audain Artist-in-Residence Program at the School for the Contemporary Arts, SFU Woodward's. A series of workshops will take place during her stay in Vancouver.
