Electronic musician and performance artist Laurie Anderson has had a diverse and lengthy artistic practice. Classically trained on the violin, she studied sculpture at Columbia University in the 1970s and was part of Lower Manhattan’s Bohemian counterculture when she did some of her first performance art pieces. Since that time Anderson has released several albums, published books, shown at major museums and scored orchestral compositions.

A true innovator, she also invented her own electric violin (tape-bow violin) and, most notably, she has developed a characteristically unique performance style that combines things like spoken narrative, video, projected imagery, songs and other energetic theatrics. Her latest performance work Dirtday! was recently presented at the University of Washington in Seattle, and takes on subjects like politics, theories of evolution, families, history and animals.

This current show at the Henry Art Gallery dives into the lesser-known books she’s produced throughout the last 40 years. Anderson’s long-standing interest in both storytelling and technology are evident in this show. Her explorations of the book structure include traditionally bound pieces, handmade books, audio and electronic formats and formal text works on paper that have been integrated with her performances.
