Sarah Cowan and Connie Michele Morey have spent this last year in a mutual and collaborative journey that has included a joint drumming practice as well as “personal, philosophical and studio exchanges … that have resulted in the unfolding of a resonant body of work.” Both artists create richly philosophical and emotional works about the body, the self and otherness. This current exhibit, Oscillatio, promises to be a beautiful, magical and somewhat quirky installation piece.

Cowan is a graduate of the Vancouver Island School of Art (VISA) and currently holds the curator’s position at Gallery 1580 in Victoria. She is known for her vast and elaborate cut paper installation. She also garnered much local attention for a previous exhibit of large-scale but delicate drawings that were shown along with a very personal journal documenting her struggle with anorexia.

Connie Michele Morey is an instructor in sculpture and contemporary craft at both the University of Victoria and VISA, and is a PhD candidate at UVic. Her doctoral work merges studio-based research with theoretical methods in an effort to understand imagination and the creative mark. Morey creates pieces of sculptural felting, often in multiples, and uses fibre and mixed media in her curious representations of innocence and violence.
