"DO IT" IS A DO-IT-YOURSELF art exhibition that comes with its own instructions. There are no artworks to see until they are created, much as music scores are interpreted by individual pianists or orchestras.
The instructions are meant to be carried out by individual visitors or community groups, using local materials. The instructions will travel to galleries across Canada and the United States, with visually unique artworks ensuing at each center. The process creates partnerships of gallery visitors and grocers, store keepers, manufacturers, students, and community organizations. At the end of the exhibits, the components will vanish, converted back into materials of everyday life.
The conceptual framework for the art-by-instruction works was curated by Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Curator of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. The fifty prominent conceptual artists, poets and researchers who wrote the instructions include Yoko Ono, Christian Boltanski, and Jimmie Durham.
