ARTRUMPS: RESISTANCE AND ACTION Bonfire Gallery, Seattle, Apr 1-Jun 3 No doubt the first in a long series of activist art exhibits in the next four years, this survey features all the big local names, including Vancouver favorite Buster Simpson, along with New Yorkers like Roz Chast and Pat Lenz. Saki Mafundikwa is sending a Trump effigy from Zimbabwe. A piñata party is scheduled for late May. Come join the fun!

MARGARET WATSON Gallery IMA, Seattle, May 4-27 For her fourth solo show, the Seattle artist blends gauzy layers of color with intruding structures. Considered a painter’s painter by many artists, Watson quietly pursues her subjective world of vanishing space, evanescing colours and surprising collisions of small-scale colour and form. Each show has been an advance over the last.

MARIMEKKO, WITH LOVE Nordic Heritage Museum, Seattle, Mar 10-Jul 9 Once Jacqueline Kennedy bought six Marimekko dresses in 1960, the Finnish design house became a global legend. Organized by the Textile Museum of Canada, this modest survey suspends iconic dresses on hangers without mannequins and piles up bolts of fabric as if in a high-end design shop. The postwar integration of Japanese and Finnish design at Marimekko is pointed out, a natural link once you think about it. Crucial documents, photographs and videos enrich the time-capsule 1960s experience.

SUMMER WHEAT: FULL CIRCLE Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington, Seattle, Mar 4-Sep 17 A visiting New Yorker at the Henry, Summer Wheat mixes ominous figuration with expressionistic brushwork in a series that associate curator Nina Bozicnik says is “conjuring the psychological toll and messiness of the mundane experience.” Smaller drawings and pieces of jewelry complement Wheat’s Seattle debut.

EIRIK JOHNSON / DANIEL CARRILLO G. Gibson, Seattle, Apr 28-Jul 9 Besides group-activist art and community-authored art, duo collaborations are back in the limelight. In this case, photographers Johnson and Carrillo create deep-blue abstracted folded images, quite different from their respective blue-collar despair and prison inmate portraits. Escapist fluff or new horizons for photography? You will want to judge.
